Fire Kills
Fire safety resources for teachers
If you are a teacher, classroom assistant or nursery nurse there are teaching resources available here so you can take part in the fire safety education programme.
Fire is one of the main causes of accidental injury and death amongst children. On average 34 children under the age of 11 are killed in fires in the UK every year and around 1,200 are injured.
Fire safety education programme
The Fire Kills campaign has developed a fire safety education programme to help increase children's and young people's awareness of the risks from fire and to help develop the skills they need to stay safe. This programme contains teaching resources which form part of the national curriculum for use with 4–16 year olds across Key Stages 1-4 (including Foundation) in the following areas:
- fire safety: prevention, detection and escape
- hoax calls
- fire setting and arson
There are also lessons that are suitable for delivery by either a teacher or a Community Fire Safety Officer (CFS Officer) – you should discuss these lessons and agree with your local CFS Officer which of you is best suited to deliver these. If you have not already been contacted by your local Fire and Rescue Service, you can enquire at your local Fire and Rescue headquarters to see if they are operating a programme in your area.
